This blog provides ongoing coverage of the development of Guangzhou's Xian Village. Over many years, officials from Guangzhou City and Xian Village's government have worked towards the development of Xian Village into high rise commercial and residential real estate. By early 2012, most of the villagers signed contracts ceding their land to development, but some land holders remain opposed. This blog seeks to shed light on the continuing process of development and the experiences of those migrants and villagers living in Xian Village. In the process I hope it will lend insight into issues of urban environment, urban change, and power relations in China. Please explore the blog to learn more about the history of Xian Village and urban villages in China.
